Got my first road bike last week

I am more of a MTB'er, but the kids bought me my first road bike for fathers day - a Carrera TDF Ltd Edition jobby from Halfords. It's perfect for me and I've been out on it a couple of times already.
However, I was out on the bike on Sunday evening when I got "knocked into" by a car which sent me flying into the kerb and over the handlebars (subsequently hitting a lamp post). Luckily, I am OK.
The bike is slightly damaged - few scuffs and scratches, but the main thing are the wheels. They appear to be out of true and the rims themselves are scored in several places. Would this affect braking? Obviously I'll get the wheels trued up properly, but want to avoid replacing them if possible.

You'll be shaving your legs in no time!
Obviously without seeing the damage and knowing the impact, its hard to say but I'd suggest they would be ok after truing. The fact is they are not high end components so not built to be light weight, as a result they will take a few knocks. You can counter this by saying they wont be made from the strongest materials either which is fair enough but if they get checked by a good shop, I would have thought they will be fine, the shop will check the spoke tension and make sure one isnt about to go ping.
Take the wheels in without the bike, shops can be snobbish about Halfords kit so you will get an honest opinion if they dont know what bike they are from and if they ask just lie and say its off a Giant or something!)

What actually happened was I riding along the road and a car passed me and stopped a few hundred yards in front at the lights. I slowed down but then as the lights changed I charged on. Literally as I got half way past the car, the driver swerved over and forced me into the kerb. The lady driver didn't stop.
Sadly neither myself nor the three witnesses saw the reg.
There is no way the lady didn't see me - I think she was over the limit by the looks of her driving!

So, thankfully the wheels was actually OK. The LBS said the grazing to the rims should be OK too.
All he had to do was some minor adjustments to brakes and gears.
Did my first "long" ride on the bike on Sunday - 17 miles with an average speed of around 14mph which I was happy with. A similar route on the mtb I only average about 10mph.
Next step is to shave the legs....
