Securing bikes to roofrack

Just wondering what people do, will be off to France in the summer and will have 4 bikes on the roof, we will have an overnight each way, is there any way of reliably securing the bikes or should I unload them?

I would just unload them.

Some of the clips I've seen of how quickly the scumbags can break through locks and bike racks especially, I just wouldn't risk it.

I took a couple of strong cable locks and D locks and tied the bikes together and ran the cable locks under the roof bars. Depends where you are staying though, try to find hotels with secure car parks, or take the bikes into your room.
