Chainring/set replacements
Discussion
Hi,
I have worn my big chainring and bottom bracket out so looking for some replacements/potential upgrades!
My bike currently runs a compact 50/34 Shimano Sora, 2300 which is an 8 speed.
Can I replace the chainset with a Tiagra or 105 version (which would be 10 speed) and it be compatible with the remainder of my groupset? (allowing me to gradually change the rest of the components to Tiagra/105 as they wear out)
Cheers Chaps!

No, chainrings likely too thin and the spacing may be off.
If you're swapping chainrings, change the cassette and chain at the same time as they wear together. You can change the chain on its own (and should) or the chain and cassette, but once the chainring starts slipping all three need to be swapped.
How old is the bike and is it worth upgrading to 10spd? Personally I'd go with a complete groupset if I was upgrading with a change in number of gears, so doing it all in one go. Merlin and Ribble are normally among the cheapest for this.

It's probably going to work out much cheaper long-term to just buy a new 10 speed groupset as they can be had from about £200 upwards for Tiagra from places like Merlin or Ribble.
By the time you've bought new 8 speed chainrings, a bottom bracket and probably a cassette and chain ti probably won't be far off the price of one of the groupsets.

It was never a problem on my cyclocross bike when that was still eight gears on the back.

New Chainrings, Old Chains
Using wider chains with chainrings intended for narrower chains is not generally a major problem if there's only a one- or two- generation difference. The only problem you might run into is that the chain will be more liable to rub on the inside of the bigger chainrings in the small/small crossover gears, gears you shouldn't be using in any case.
