Marin Components For Old Bike

I want to get my old Marin Mount Vision mountain bike up and running again, it's of a 2000 vintage.

There's only one thing wrong with it and I need a new part. What's the chances of being able to get one from my local Marin dealers whoever they may be? I tried contacting ATB sales who were the UK distributors for Marin, though they don't seem to be any more, but they didn't respond

The part in question is the stud that joins the rear shock absorber to the swing arm, somehow it has managed to strip the inner part of the thread on one side of it so that now you can't fully tighten it and you can feel the play in it when riding. Bit disconcerting when you can feel the rear of the bike wiggling around on a high speed descent.

I guess I could just pack it out with a few washers but my fear would be that it could totally fail at some point which depending on when it fails could have a bad outcome.

The part is a stud 8mm in diameter with the body being 45mm in length then on each end is a 6mm threaded section 10mm in length. Each end has a 2.5mm washer on it and a nyloc nut.

I've looked for bolts of similar size and shape but can't find anything. Are there companies out there who would be able to make this part for me but without costing loads?

I've obviously scoured the Internet, eBay, etc. for a replacement but to no avail.

Or you could try helicoiling the existing stud?

Seems feasible

Now I haven't done much metal working since school so bear with me. Using 8mm rod if I want a 6mm thread on each end of it do I use a die to cut an 8mm thread initially, then re-cut to 7mm, then 6mm? With the current stud the body is 8mm, the thread is 6mm and the washers sit against the shoulder between the 6mm threaded section and the 8mm body. It would need to be the same as this.

The problem you'll have with the bar and nuts suggestion I'd that you can't fit a socket over the nut within the housing to tighten it up.

Thanks, I looked at those bolts and wasn't sure if any of them were quite right to replace the current stud. As your Wolf Ridge's frame is pretty much the same as mine what size bolt did you go for and did you have to use an washers?

Thanks for that, that does look like it could do the job though it may be ever so slightly longer than the current stud but I'm sure I could file it down a little if needs be. For the sake of a few £ I think I'll get one and see if it fits.

Have you tried Retro-Bike? I had a similar thing happen and ended up buying a set from a Whyte on eBay for £12 or so which seemed a touch steep.

I tried to find the order as I couldn't remember but no luck I'm afraid, think it may have been the M8 70mm x 30mm thread. No washers needed but I did put a normal thin one each side to protect the frame when tightening.

I just measured the frame having removed the old one and worked it out from there, take into account that the length measurement does not include the head of the bolt from memory.
