Bike hire & cycling in Orlando area

I'm about to go on holiday with my family to Florida. My father in law is massively into cycling and as a recent convert myself the idea of not going for a ride for two weeks doesn't appeal! So firstly, has anyone hired a bike out there? Secondly is the area any good for cycling? I saw some (rather old) posts on other forums suggesting Florida as the most dangerous state in the US for cycling!

We went there last year for a holiday and I got chatting to a club out on their sunday ride. One of them was an ex pat. He described cycling in Orlando as a bit dull compared to what he did back here in the UK. Lots of long straight flat roads. However on the flipside, He said the weather was much better and ice and snow was never a major concern

Looking at a couple of group rides they reckon 18-22 mph for the no drop novice group and 32-34 mph for the 'a' group...therefore flatter than a witches tit.
