How to fit a wicker basket (and basket support) to bike?

Hi all,
My partner has a very old sit up and beg style bike. Her wicker basket was toast after a few years of lots of use and overloading. We've purchased a new basket but i'm unsure how best to fit it.
The support bracket (installed behind the front axle nuts) is still in place, and I understand that the basket sits on that, and a flat metal plate is laid in the bottom of the basket and bolts passed through to sandwich the wicker between the two flat surfaces of the basket support. Leather straps then pass around the handlebars.
There is a stronger looking section in the middle of the bottom of the basket but there are no holes. It's all bonded together and I can't ease a gap between two wicker strands to push the bolts through - do I just drill some holes?
I'm sure its an obvious question but it's quite an expensive basket which she got for her birthday and i'll have hell to pay if it falls apart in a weeks time!
