Looking for some advice on who is currently a good home insurer to cover bikes?

Thanks

Been researching this as ours is due ... Allianz look good, although max standard cover is £5k. I'm sure a phone call to add some more will be easy enough.

I went through this recently and used iGO4 (they just an online aggregator).

They were quite happy with insuring my 4 bikes with a combined value of c. £7k (plus a nice watch) for less than £400 pa which includes all the usual acciental damage to home and contents.

I got a really good deal with Amex when I set up my insurance, they didn't need anything under 1500 specified, and didn't seem to charge any more for bikes total worth up to 6k from memory.

That sounds a good price, I pay a horrific amount to cover my bikes in with the house insurance but the cover is very good, being full cover out of the house as well is in. It's via Directline and each bike is named and with a full spec, almost £600 PA though, 5 x £2k bikes covered, I think before the bikes were added the house cover was £300 buildings and contents so I suppose £300 PA for bike covers not too bad or is it??

I don't know who's the best, I can only comment from experience;

My story; Direct Line Insurance: the bike was stolen from my garage, attached to the house, the bike was listed on the policy. New bike in 8 days including all the upgrades I had made since purchase (Wheels, shifters etc.)

My mates story; Allianz insurance (through a broker): Bike stolen from the rear of his VW van whilst parked on the drive (cover on policy for loss inside locked vehicle), massive argument as to whether is was fraud or not, payment offered and then withdrawn. Full complaint submitted, more to-ing and fro-ing, two months gone still no bike, although I think a settlement has been reached now.

Like the advert says Mr Wolf can sort it for you!!

No I don't work for DL, I just had great service from them, I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to say how poor they are.

I have recently taken out a policy with John Lewis. Named the bike and value £2200 on the policy as a named item. There was no requirement for gold stand locks/security measures etc in the documentation. I think I paid £330 all in for buildings and contents, that was for their top package with all the options. Havent had a need to claim or had any deals with them since taking it out though!

I think jimmyVX has hit the nail on the head, you only know how good they are when you need them and then it's too late.

A few friends have had very good experiences with Marks & Spencers. If bike is under £3000 it doesn't need to be specified. After a claim have had a full pay out with no problems.

^ That has changed recently AFAIk - some friends of mine used them.

I'm with Hiscox- everyone else either wouldn't cover me, or quoted a crazy price.

The two most expensive bikes are only covered in the house though, as covering them outside was stupid money, but they never get locked up so that's kind of a wash.

+1 for Pedalcover cheaper than my previous John Lewis and M&S policies with better bike cover, Darren is really helpful (and a cyclist!)

from personal experience;
don't go with the AA
they hand everything off to third parties, right from the moment you report the claim;
you are then given the run around

Taken many months to settle my claims....
I won't be re-newing

Another vote for John Lewis, along with NFU they get the best Which customer service scores than anyone else.

They were doing 1/3 off last year, as above bike was added fairly easily to the policy. Finger crossed it isn't required.

Nationwide home insurance were excellent after my bikes were stolen 2 days before Christmas.
I called at 8.30am,once I had a crime number they took details of the bikes. They said as the detached garage was classed as part of the house we were covered under their £5k limit. The same day I had another call from them offering different bikes as replacements which I declined so took bank details and made a cash settlement a few days later. Boxing day we were out buying replacements.

That's good to hear as I'm not only insured on the same policy but am one of the product managers for Nationwide General Insurance!
