Fox 36 Axle

Hi

Bought daughter a second hand Orange bike which has Fox 36 forks fitted.

The allen key slot in the end is worn such that I can't remove the axle.

Well I could, but would need a new one to put the wheel back.

My question is, where can I get one from at a reasonable cost, looked on E bay etc and they seem to be over £40, which seems a little excessive for a little shaft!

Plan B will be to remove it and get something fitted to the end to allow future removal / re-fitting, but a new one at the right price would be nice.

That's a similar price to the new rock shox axle I need. Depends what material it's made out of I guess.

They are aluminium, the shaft should only be lightly tightened it's the pinch bolts that should be on tight.

Hi

I appreciate that, just bought the bike second hand, didn't notice the 'rounded' allen key hole at time of purchase.

All sorted now, tapped out damaged hole to M6, fitted an Allen Key screw (black, you hardly notice it against the forks), and double lock nutted it on inside.

Done for a total cost £1.99 for a pack of Allen Key nuts / screws rather than £47 for a new shaft.

Result!

i've never thought much of the fox 20 mm axle, as you have found, the ends are quite delicate

Absolutely, I guess it's 2006/7 era?

They dropped that design and moved over to a far better QR style release for both the bolt and the lowers - well until 2015 - sadly now the 36 sits right in the middle of the 'Enduro' marketing niche now so everything has the be 'race ready' so they've got back to pinch bolts to save a gram or two.

It's on a 2008 orange patriot, so it looks like you are correct with your age evaluation
