Front mech won't shift to inner ring

I decided to give my bike a proper clean yesterday, part if which involved taking the chain off and giving it a proper degrease and clean. In the process I managed to lose the two rollers at each end (I know, I know......) so had to shorten by whatever number of links (3 pins I think) before rejoining using a SRAM style link. Now this afternoon it won't shift onto the inner ring, is the loss of those links likely to be the cause? I didn't mess with anything else and as far as I can see there's been no cable slip.

Will it shift down if the chain is on a smaller sprocket at the rear? It might not like shifting off the big ring if there's too much tension in the chain.

Pop it on to the smallest ring on your cassette and try it ( this should rule out chain tension)

Try the shifter and see if the front mech actually moves (it could be stuck, due to you washing all the lube of it) if it doesn't move give it a gentle nudge....

I think you've sussed it for me! It shifted fine just now using the smallest gear on the cassette, and now seems ok throughout the range so the mech must've been a bit sticky (I had re-lubed it, honest!)
