Morning all;
as my insurance co are finally paying out for my bike theft, I have 1500 to spend;
I've already bought a new carbon FS MTB, so a road bike is the obvious choice
So, I have 1500 to spend;

Lightweight
carbon(?)
must be pretty comfy - never gonna race
just looking for some winter fitness motivation !
Me- 6ft2 34 inside leg 90KG, long arms (sounds like a bloody monkey... no wise cracks)

Everyone will have an opinion based on expereinces with certain brands but the Canyon Endurance CF7.0 SL ticks all the boxes and value for money wise will not be beaten, you just wont be able to see it etc until it arrrives on your doorstep but thats why its the best vfm. Any other bike will be a compromise somewhere along the spec sheet although there is a chance you can try before you buy. If that matters to you then you are limited to what local shops sell and how far you are prepared to travel. A fitting session and some online geomoetry research will go a long way to helping the fit, there are dozens of articles online about how to get a gfood fit on a bike, the basics are quite simple.

The Canyon is nice, looks fantastic, poor wheels though. Lots of competition at that price however.
I'd actually be tempted to suggest something a little different.
There's a shockingly good offer on at Planet X at the moment with a pro carbon with 11 speed Ultegra for £900 - not quite on par with the Canyon but there's a LOT you could do with the remaining £600.
Spending the remainder of the budget on upgrades yields a very nice bike.
Add some Zondas (£300)
Carbon post, decent saddle, decent tyres and personal choice on the rest of the finishing kit and it should come up lighter and a slightly higher spec.
Alternately a Boardman Pro carbon SLR comes in under budget if you use the right offers, down from 1800 to 1400ish.
Full ultegra including wheels, however the crank is a standard double so might not be right if you prefer a compact
There's also a lot of 2014 models at the 2-2.k mark coming in budget in the sales....

Mavic Askium wheels - perfectly adequate, and pretty typical on a bike of this value.
Conti GP4000s tyres - one of the best clinchers available which work well in all conditions.

Still feel the Aksiums are poor (1850g) - I've got a set I use on my winter bike. They aren't that light, aren't that aero, just meh - a lot better than some factory fit wheelsets OFC.Mavic Askium wheels - perfectly adequate, and pretty typical on a bike of this value.

Misread the tyres though for some reason I thought they were running Mavic tyres - which aren't great.
The GP4000s are excellent. I stand corrected on that one!
I think the Canyon is a great shout.
Well worth paying the extra £49 over budget for the Endurance CF 9.0 IMO for the upgrades over the 7.0 SL - namely seatpost, saddle and DT Swiss wheels (around £360 to buy):

FFS. I think its reaching the point where we should actually have a sticky on this subject!
Planet X are doing the RT-57 with SRAM Force 22 for £1k. Thats pretty good value. You could get some decent bars and wheels with the spare cash.
I have a Planet X and I'd echo the statements above. IE the finishing kit is crap. Worth replacing items like the bars and seat post.
Cannondale SuperSix and Synapse are worth a look too.

The planet x frame has been around for a while, something like six years without can update I'd guess, the canyon endurance is a brand new frame designed by canyon to meet the requirements of riders like the op. Carbon and frame design has moved on a lot in six years, there is no point fitting a shiny 11 speed ultegra groupset and zondas to an old frame, spend the money on getting the best frame you can buy and upgrade over time. Don't sit there on an old frame with shiny bits thinking you got the bargain of the decade, get the canyon with the superior frame, my point is the frameset is the core of the bike, put the money there...
When the what 2k bike thread comes up I'll still say the Cervelo R3 with 105 and fulcrum 7s and get shot down becsuse it's only 105 and the wheels are 100 retail but it's the absolute very best frame you will get on a complete bike for under 2k and wheels etc can be upgraded. No one buys a complete bike then upgrades the frame whilst keep ing the original groupset and wheels...
