So for the 1st time I thought I'd give one a go as off work and riding everyday, between 30-50km mountain bike or 50-60km road bike. I want to loose some weight, only a kg or two, 76kg 5'10" at the moment, think ideal would be 73kg and tone up a bit as got some fat on my torso, thought a protein recovery type mix maybe an idea rather than coming in and piling a load of food down after each ride feeling hungry.

I went for high5 recovery powder that can be mixed with water, never have milk in the house. Reading the pot it seems to be 70% sugar 30% whey protein. Recommends 66g a serving within an hour after finishing exercise, it's ideal in that walk in shove in in my bottle and down it, good convenience so like the idea. However 46g of sugar,... That's probably more refined sugar than I'd consume in a normal week let along one go I've never been one for fizzy drinks, cola etc, tea or coffee, don't eat cake, never had a sweet tooth, no biscuits, sweets or chocolate ever in the house, occasionally some fruit juice but not that often Basically normal diet is made up of meat, cheese, eggs, veg, pasta, rice and the odd Chinese, curry, fish and chips thrown in for good measure. So it makes me wonder if introducing this amount of sugars a good thing?

Anyone recommend a convenient supplement type drink that maybe more suitable or is that sugar whey mix the accepted norm / way to go?

Avoid anything that says 'recovery' as they are generally full of sugar (as you have found). You can get other similar products which are much more protein and much less sugar. Tesco do a cheapy one, but there are plenty of others. The one on my shelf says 72g protein and 4.4g sugar per 100g.

Probably better to do it with real protein sources if you can though.

Recovery is as much about replenishing glycogen levels (via high GI carbs) as it is protein. That is why it has sugar in it.

Why do you think riders neck a can of coke at the top of a mountain top finish stage before they do anything else...

If you're riding a grand tour then fine, but regularly piling into a load of sugar after more modest rides is a pretty cr@p routine and isn't going to help OP burn fat.

I didn't say he needed it but that is why recovery products have what they have in them as replacing is just as important as rebuilding (protein).

Hum interesting, well I guess the sugar / protein mix is ideal for convenience but stick to only having it post exercise - as said I do like the convenience of simply taking empty post ride water bottle off bike, throw in a measure of powder, fill bottle from tap, drink, job done.

For the record I'd got fat, 83kg from generally being down due to work issues and getting into a downward spiral of coming home to booze and associated physical inactivity. In 3 weeks so far of sorting myself out, no work, no booze, back to exercise I weighed in this morning at 74.6kg so certainly the riding i'm doing has been working regards burning the fat and the last week of having the high5 post ride has made me feel less knackered the next day. Generally feeling a lot better in myself smile got to keep it up now.

I like the Torq carb drinks you consume whilst riding, I suffer from dehydration easily, so I find they help me, although it could be Placebo

Just have water and save some cash, carbs have no bearing on dehydration.

The salts & and minerals might though when riding hard for 2+ hours?

Yes, but you can get tabs for that without all the unnecessary calories of a carb drink if you're just riding about smile

But I don't think they work myself, I've still cramped despite having that stuff in my bottle.

I've quit the tabs (so to speak) and haven't noticed any difference. I figured if I was having one of those tabs on every ride I'd be taking in a huge amount of salt over the years which would probably do me more harm than good in the long run.

I use High5 Zero or the SIS equivalent. I still almost faint whilst getting up most of the time so pile the salt on everything. yum

A pint of milk mixed with some semi-skimmed milk powder does the trick. Add a dash of nesquik for flavour.

The nesquik isn't for flavour its for the high gi carbs.
