Changing mech with different sized chainset?

Just about to change the chainset on my CX from a 34/50 to a CX setup of 36/46.

I've seen a comment about it being necessary to change the front mech as well to work properly with the smaller rings.

Is this correct? If so can anyone point me towards what I need? (SRAM setup with apex throughout, Rival front mech, fitting a RED 36/46 chainset soonish)

Personally I'd try it with your existing mech and see how well it works, it may be fine. The manufacturers often state that certain components are recommended to be used together, but that may be as much to reduce the amount of combinations they have to test, as anything else.

Just lower the one you have down a bit to suit the 46 ring, no need to change mechs.

Surely it should work fine, as the inner ring is bigger and the outer ring is smaller. At worst you're going to need to lower it slightly.

If it was a definite "new one needed" I'd try and have it on hand and do everything at once.
Instead of adding to my list of "bikes that need new bits" (come on chain reaction!)
