Recommend me an ebike?

Hi All,

I love a bit of pedalling at the weekend but not sweating on the way to work. Was thinking an ebike could be a good way to avoid the tube over a 5 mile commute?

Anyone use one? Got any recommendations?

I've got a Kalkhoff Pro Connect, I love it. For a 5 mile commute I reckon it would be ideal, you'd probably only have to charge it once a week. The importers are an outfit called 50cycles, they have a showroom in Hampton Wick where you could have a test ride.

The Giant Ebike's looked good when a company did a demo at my workplace recently. I was able to take one for a test ride, good fun and ideal for a commute in normal clothes.
The one I tried had Hub gears and low/ medium/high Electric assustance.
Laptop type charger so battery can be slid out & charged at work etc. Apparantly the battery's are good for around 5 years before replacement required.
A bit pricey though..

My mate bought a Giant off ebay and uses it to commute. He finds that he can crank out the same 20-30mins trip to and from work regardless of conditions.

When he rode his non-ebike one week, the trip to work was 30mins but the ride home into a headwind was nearly 1hr. Just showed how effective it was.

I've got a Giant Hybrid Escape 2 and it's fantastic; I use it three times a week for my 25 mile round trip commute and really enjoy it. I tried a new Giant yesterday with in hub gears etc and didn't get on with it at all, mine with deraileurs feels more like a 'proper' bike to me - very much horses for courses though, you should go and try some if you can.

I can't see how you can convert a normal bike with that gear, looks more like you'd need a specialist frame?

He also lives up a mountain and only has one leg.
