Bottle / Cage MTB

Any recommendations?

As a noob, I've been riding with a bottle in a rucksack, and would like to ditch that and go for a frame mounted bottle. Is that the way forward? Is that just asking for the bottle to jump out as soon as I encounter any rough stuff?

OK in dry but as soon as it the weather gets wet it would get covered in mud.

I used to use a Camel Bak type device, but was not good at cleaning it so they all went mouldy.

Now I just carry water in a bottle and some energy drink in a separate bottle in my ruck sack.

Works for me.

Works for me as I dislike a sweaty bag I like the cheaper metal cages that you can bend to make em fit snugger. The plastic ones break anyway. Yeah might get muddy though, not bothered really as I try not to ride mtbs in the wet/mud

The sweaty back from the rucksack is my main motivator too, although if that was the only practical option that's what I'd do.

Point taken about covering the bottle in mud, so I suppose one with a flip up lid is a good plan then?

I use a camelbak. To combat mould you need to empty it of water and store in the freezer.

I think camelbaks are far better than bottles because you can drink on climbs easily without having to stop. If you stop a lot on rides, a bottle works okay. But I don't stop

Err, don't need to stop riding if using a bottle OP you can get a 1l bottle too if only have one cage.

Get an ally cage. Some of my bottles are fatter than others so without being able to squish it they fall out!

It works for me, because I have a small frame, and it's so much easier than trying to pull it from a 'regular' bottle holder, and fouling the top tube. I find it's great 'on the move' too, because it's easier to put the bottle in and out without taking eyes off the trail for too long.

I've not lost a bottle yet, so they seem to be secure enough, although I don't go in for jumps/drops and 'downhill black runs' or any other silly nonsense. I like my tyres to be in contact with the ground. My only drama came when I glugged down a great big helping of thick black mud which had got itself into the spout of my Camelbak Podium water bottle after I splashed through a puddle, so I'd recommend you get a flip-top cap type of bottle, but the cage itself is brilliant. I wouldn't use anything else on my MTB now.
