Problems with Garmin HRM poss bike related
Discussion
Has anyone had any problems with a Garmin HRM and a carbon bike? I've been out on my Ribble twice now and on both occasions my HRM has recorded peaks of over 250 bpm and sustained over 220. Hopefully you can see the strava trace below.

OK, I know I'm unfit and smoke 30 to many a day, but the last time I went out on my MTB I peaked at 170 for more effort used.
I've changed the battery, wetted the contact pads, and made sure the strap is done up enough, and I'm not wearing anything different (same shorts and top).
The only difference between my road and MTB setup is the roadie is carbon and has a Garmin cadence sensor, and rider position. Garmin assure me the HRM and cadence sensor operate on different frequencies and will not conflict.
Has anyone get a rational explanation for this? I'm worried and lost now!

I though heart rates that high were not good news! Resting is between 60 - 70.
It will be an anomaly, It wont be much above 200. Often the issue is caused by static from the jersey, might be worth trying a different one.
The general rule of thumb is 220 less your age = maximum. It isn't perfect, but gives you an idea.
Dont think its anything to do with the bike, as above just static or something.
I've had a couple of rides when its gone up to 250 bpm when I know my max is 190 ... I've also been riding at a steady rate before knowing I was at say 75% of my max BPM and its read something daft like 120%.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the bike at all.
On the Bryton heart rate monitors you could reset them by putting the coin battery in the wrong way round and then put it back in properly again. Try doing that with a new battery and see how you get on.
If it doesn't help then I would suggest the heart rate monitor is faulty and you should get a replacement (Note that it doesn't have to be a Garmin branded one if you're not still covered by warranty).

I had this, eventually figured it was a duff battery, although if you're using the garmin strap these are known to be flaky so may need replacing.
I had my Garmin premium strap go. It just stopped reading my heart rate, so replaced (and reset) with the battery, still nothing.Wrote to Garmin (it wasn't that old, maybe 18 months or so) who said that because I didn't buy it through an authorised retailer, they wouldn't do anything. When I asked what the guarantee was, they said a year. So they wouldn't have done anything anyway! They then kindly offered me the same unit (of which mine broke after 18months) for retail price. Oddly, I said no, a bought a Wahoo! one, which has been great for 2yrs.

Mines been faultless for the last 3 years, then in the last 4 days bam!Wrote to Garmin (it wasn't that old, maybe 18 months or so) who said that because I didn't buy it through an authorised retailer, they wouldn't do anything. Not really. It's a sensitive thing that picks up the bioelectrical signal of your heartbeat. What do you expect to happen when you rub a synthetic shirt over it and create a bunch of static?
Have a look here, some of the advice may be helpful http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/04/troubleshooting...

Its worked perfectly for the last 3 years, then on the last 2 its gone haywire! The jersey's haven't changed so the sensor must be at fault.Have a look here, some of the advice may be helpful http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/04/troubleshooting...
I've cleaned it, changed the battery, and tried different positions on the body, all of which result in the same.
My last 3 rides most recent at the top

I was having spike problems with my Garmin HRM, the erratic readings were peaking at around 250BPM especially when I was only wearing a thin summer jersey. I decided to buy the Polar Softstrap as recommended on the dcrainmaker blog.
I was expecting a perfect solution to the problem but when I attached my Garmin sensor to the Polar strap it was not a good fit, the pop-stud fasteners are a couple of mm wider apart on the Polar strap and also the fasteners are of a slightly different profile so the Garmin sensor does not sit correctly and the Polar strap has a slight bunching of material at the rear. When any stretching of the strap is applied the Garmin sensor pops out off the studs due to the different profile.
My solution to the problem was to wet the contact points of the Garmin strap under a running water tap (without the sensor attached) so that a good electrical contact with the strap and my body is obtained and so far I have not had any more problems
