Garmin 800/ Strava question

Someone has kindly posted a link to the Garmin 800 in the "what bike bits" thread and I quite fancy one as I am new to biking and do not have a cycle computer of any type.
I have been using Strava on my Samsung Galaxy but it eats the battery.

Will the Garmin800 run Stava? And how do I upload the data? (so I can leave phone at home)

If the Garmin does run Strava does it show you realtime segments/ghost rides etc? Basically is it worth ditching my phone for?

You finish the ride and download your ride onto strava by plugging it into your computer via the usb cable after opening the strava website on the computer.

You can download routes from strava onto your 800 to follow. You don't see any strava information like segments etc on the 800.

I have the cheapest Garmin & I find it terrific , so I'd imagine the 800 would be really good.

If you get an ant+ stick for your computer I think you can make the garmin sync on it's own whenever you get in and it will automatically upload to the garmin connect site then if you sign up to tpiriik for a small fee it will automatically sync garmin connect and strava hourly. Or as already said you can just plug it in every now and then and upload everything

It depends on what you want from a device. If you don't need maps then you're better off with the cheaper non GPS model? However, I have used the 800 quite a bit as a guide. It is mega useful for me to grab other rides from Strava, say if you were stuck in Holland as I was last week. Or you can use mapmyride and create something. Battery life is good, I have had 12hrs from mine with some left.

The 800 doesn't 'run' Strava it just logs your route, Strava then overlays the GPS with their database. You can set up a virtual training partner with the 800, it is ok, but I dont use it much. More useful is the lap timer by distance or marker. You can get the 800 to record your lap which can then be used for pacing over something like a TT course. When you add power into the data as well it is quite a powerful training aid.

One word of warning though. Save everything to the SD card. There are free maps out there so dont spend a fortune on the Garmin ones.

I have had a Garmin 800 for over a year. It's a great bit of kit but the instructions from Garmin either online or the (almost non existant) manual are dire.

To get it working properly as a cycle sat nav you need to use TCX maps. See these links:-

Thanks guys, think I will get one, was trying to decide whether I should get a cheapo computer for speed/ distance etc and use phone for Strava or splash the cash for a Garmin.

If you search your archives you will find several references to my site going back a couple of years probably.
Anyway, if anyone needs a hand with getting their head around the edge 800, just give me a shout. That's all I wanted to get across.

hi.
I bought a ebay Garmin 800 about 2 months ago, as booked in for the Oxford to Cambridge ride in Sept and never ridden longer than 18miles before haha..
now up to 52.8 and finding great back roads and villages..

i use the "gps...." link above to "create map" on google earth then save the gpx files onto the garmin. you can have "guidance" switched on, so the thing beeps and gives you a count down before you need to make a turn...then after that the screen toggles back to MPH, time, etc etc...
really nice bit of kit thats helping with my milage..

oh i also bought for about £10 a different plastic mount that allows the gps to fix in front of the handbars rather than on the head stem...just makes it easier..

BATTERY LIFE...manual says up to 9hrs.
all i can says is the screen said I still had 65% left after 3:45hr ride on sunday.
.
also used it in the car....you can change from bike to car settings ie...motorway use etc etc....
