Best hybrid for a grand

Well than to some scumbags theiving the 3 family bikes from the barn I need to replace my mountain bike through ironically my insurance.

I didn't do much off roading, just cycle paths and roads etc. so a hard tail with road tires was a bit pointless.

So started looking at hybrids and the bmc alpenstar range has caught my eye.

Thoughts please fellas, pro against - alternatives?

Charge Grater 3? Hub gears and disc brakes = low maintenance.

I have a trek 7.5fx. Use it for commuting which is a mix of road and canal tow path, and also leisure with a kids seat on the back with the little one in it.

Been faultless in two years. It's fast enough on the road, comfortable and if you can get last years model, a bargain! Evans have some 2013 bikes at the moment.

Recently bought a second hand Boardman Hybrid pro after reading some really good reviews.I use it on the road and tow paths and it's been great so far...

Whyte has a couple of good ranges of hybrids, one aimed at roads and the other more general purpose. All with discs.

Another vote for Trek, but this time an 8.5DS. I bought one in October 2012 after really getting the cycling bug and it's served me well over the last 3500 miles, absolutely faultless.

Most of my mileage as been road with a bit of trail / cycle path and it's superb on both. I entered a couple of sportives (50m & 65m) last year and it was fine.

Some would say the front sus is pointless but with a remote lockout it works for me. Only thing I changed was the tyres - comes with chunky ones more suited to off-road work but a change to 32 Schwalbe Marathons which really helps on the road.
