Speedplay pedals

I've been using SPD-SL with 105 pedals for the last year or so. Despite plenty of hours and countless unclipping/clipping in I still fluff clipping in at times. At busy junctions and roundabouts I often just use the sole of my shoe to get going and then clip in once clear of the traffic. This isn't always the case and often I clip in first time.

I'm not usually clumsy or uncoordinated but I do seem to struggle with these things! With that in mind I'm wondering if the speedplay pedals might be a better option. Reviews are pretty favourable, noting that they do require a bit more maintainance, but I only ride at weekends and so they won't get THAT much use.

Anyone using them?

Love em. More 'float' than a lot of others, but double sided and easy.

If ease of clipping in is a priority then maybe MTB pedals are best?
Speedplays have a tiny surface, so although they are double sided if you miss them its very hard to pedal without clipping in.

Yeah, some MTB pedals have a platform with the cleat in the middle. And MTB shoes are flat with the cleat in the middle. So even when not clipped in you can easily push the pedal:

Lots of the pro peloton use them by choice, if I didn't use mtb pedals these are my pedals of choice.

I'd rather stick with road pedals - I prefer the feel once clipped in. I presumed that being double sided that the Speedplays would be easier to clip into.

Yes, been using them for the last few years - they're great. Really handy if you need to stop often and unclip at junctions, having two surfaces to clip into when pushing away is very handy. You can dial the float in and out to suit - I started off with quite a lot of float after my knee operations and now have it pretty much dialled out. I've even bough the Sidi Ergo 3 in Speedplay specific soles - an excellent shoe/cleat/pedal combo.
