SPD-SL Shoes (and pedals) for Wide Feet

Guys,

I just got back into cycling after a long (10 year) break so just bought a new road bike etc. Obviously it just came with cheap £5 plastic pedals with straps, so I'm looking to get some proper shoes and pedals.

However my feet are about as long as a size 9 but as wide as a size 11, so I need a recommendation for a shoe and pedal combo to suit. Any ideas?

Lake are reportedly VERY wide as standard, sized for US-shaped get rather than the traditionally narrower Euro. They also offer a wide fit on top of that. That is, of course, if you can get them: seems very few places stock them.

Sidi Genius in a Mega fit also come up very wide throughout the shoe (toes/midfoot/heel and instep).

EDIT: as for pedals, whatever you fancy! Speedplay offer the most/easiest adjustment, but are comparatively higher maintenance and more expensive. Shimano have the best bearings and durable cleats. Not overly keen on other offerings: everything else has weak bodies or rubbish bearings.

It's across the toes that I usually have issues with shoes. It's as if I've got an extra one or something! (I don't, it just feels like it when trying shoes on!)

I forgot to say, I don't have a fixed budget, but my bike was £800rrp if that puts things in perspective.

If you have seriously wide feet, the SIDI do some version in a width called MEGA.
Other brands will have varying width levels. Sidi as a standard show is relatively narrow for example.

How much are you looking to spend?

I _think_ Shimano's wide fitting is wider across the toe-box, if that helps.

Re. Sidis:
Erogs are available in non-mega only, and are narrow.
Genius come up, IIRC, 4-6mm wider than Ergos.
Genis are available in Mega, which are another 4-6mm wider, with higher instep.
Sidi 1/2 sizes add 3mm in length, with more width and volume.
The insoles are utterly hopeless: for such an expensive, they're a joke, with ZERO arch support. None whatsoever. You MAY want to consider insoles if such things matter.

If a bigger size or two of any shoe offers the right volume but extra length, don't settle for them: keep looking and find another shoe. Going up sizes for volume may move cleat bolts too far forwards.

Have a look at the DHB range from Wiggle. I recently tried their MTB and road shoes and they were much wider than my standard fit Shimano shoes. Good value for money too

Having had issues with my slightly wider feet than narrow shoes would accommodate. Tried Spesh, tried Sidis, all in standard width ( sidi mtb shoes fit me fine) Ended up with a pair of Diadora shoes from Chain Reaction. Lots of space for my toes. Usually I am a 45, but they do a half size, so went 45.5. No foot pain now and only £70 spent so happy.

DHB are made by Lake. The last is exactly the same, so relatively wide.

Giro also make a "HV" (high volume) model of one of their shoes, the name of which escapes me. Also comes with an e-Soles-ish adjustable insole

Could take a look at Bont.

The more expensive ones can be bought in a wide fit but also the entry level Riot's are reported to be pretty wide too.

They have the benefit of being able to be heat moulded to your foot too.

Also, regards buying shoes online; since I don't know which size will fit best until I've tried them on, is it acceptable to order several sizes of the same style and then return the ones that don't fit?

you think that's bad, mine are as long as size 6 but as wide as size 11, apparently!
