Stainless cables and nice lined cable outers. Shimano XT/ XTR as the standard to look at. Also make sure the noodle is perfect as they can split the liner inside.

years ago stainless braided cable was the best stuff, can't seem to get it anymore, not sure why.

Hadn't thought about changing out the noodles, this may be the issue. Have got Avid flack jackets fitted which I think are stainless cables.

Search Ebay etc for Jagwire. I've been very happy with them on a number of bikes now.

All branded cables are good, but don't expect them to last forever.

I tend to change them when they lose their shiny colour and look dirty - no logic to it, just a guideline.
