Oh dear broken rear mech hangar today

Did I do something wrong?

Climbing a small hill on the way into work (out of the saddle), the chain comes off the front chainring and sends my sensitive parts crashing into the top tube (ouch). The front mech has been a bit

Anyhow I turn down the hill and attempt to get the chain back on using the front mech shifters (always worked in the past), only all of a sudden the rear derailleur is now going round with the rear wheel and the rear mech hangar has sheared in half.

This happened to me, the cage was bent as a result.

Check it's not the mech hangar that's broken.

Check for other damage my mech hanger broke and took out the cage but fortunatly didn't damage the wheel.

Chances are the hanger failed and took off the chain.

I could be wrong of course, this is the internet and I wasn't actually there :shrug:

These guys are great. Have ordered twice from them - next day delivery. I now carry spares. None of their products have yet broken - both were original hangers

Both times have needed nothing more than a hanger replacement and a tweak on the barrels.
