Manitou rear shock

My rear shock has started to make a loud banging noise and seems to have no damping on the first inch of travel when it just springs straight back up. Has anyone heard of this before? The shock is 9 years old is it worth fixing or would it be better to buy a new one?

I guess it's a Swinger? I'd have a word with someone like http://www.reboundsuspension.co.uk/ or http://www.tftunedshox.com/default.aspx and see what they say as a starting point.

No.

I'm not being flippant, but it's really no - the starting point for a repair is a service which will cost you £80 - £100, then there will no doubt be something broken from what you describe. IF they can get the parts for a 9 year old shock (I just had to buy a whole new damper for a 3 year old Fox fork because they don't make parts anymore) you'll be in the £150ish price range and after that.... you'll have a 9 year old shock.

They come a pile of different sizes, but you can buy a basic shock for less than that

Post up you shock size or the make / year of the frame.

P.S. if it's not returning to full travel, be VERY careful if you're thinking of opening it up, it'll be under a lot of pressure.

It's a 05 demo 8. I was looking on TFtuned last night and just the service for a swinger is 120 and then postage and like you say it's still a 9 year old shock. They have vanillas on for 180 I think, maybe give them a call.

Yeah you'll need a 8.75 x 2.75 / 222mm x 70mm, if you didn't already know.

I personally wouldn't bother with fixing the Manitou.

It's a good shock, it's going to be a lot better than your current one, they also take the same size springs I believe.

There's a few shocks that should fit your Demo on Pinkbike, if you haven't had the pleasure of Pinkbike classifieds before... It's a bit of a den of aholes - you'd be amazed how many people had things expensively serviced with Mojo / TF Tuned only to immediately sell them on, or decide to sell bikes after a single 10 min ride to the shops... they all lose the paperwork too.

Still, trying to buy from PB is infinitely better than trying to sell on there.

Anyway, I digress, this looks a good starting point.
