Why are you always so slow away from the lights? Faffing about trying to clip in whilst pulling away on the smallest rear cog.

Yes you may pass me once you get up to your 30kmh+ speed where I'm doing 25, but as soon as you do, we've hit the next set of red lights, so we're all back to square one.

This morning I remained neck and neck with such a guy for nearly 8 miles, despite the fact he easily had an extra 10kmh once in clean air.

Since when has cycle shoes become hard-core? I wear them, as they're designed for the job.

Because he/she wants to ride a road bike to work? Maybe that's their only bike? Why do you care?

Maybe they've already commuted a lot further than you have?

At this time of the year there are a lot of people who haven't ridden for a while or are on an unfamiliar bike. If they don't get down the gears before they come to a halt they will have little choice other than to pull away in the gear in which they stopped. If you add in the complication of avoiding membership of the club you begin to understand what may be happening.

A lot of people don't seem to gear down in anticipation of stopping, I always like to drop back 2 or 3 cogs when coming to a stop at a light or slowing to turn right in the road, then you can accelerate over that lane nice and quickly.

When you can cruise comfortably at 20+mph there is much less incentive to rush to 10mph as quickly as possible. Set off smoothly and comfortably and then wind the speed on once you are rolling.

That's not to say that they can't set off quickly, or to excuse the wobbling about failing to clip in, just that there isn't the same need.

I have 3 bikes, a winter road bike, a summer road bike and a mountain bike.

The winter road bike is the most suitable for riding to work so I use that.

Simple.

As a commuter on a mountain bike I'm with you on this. It was particularly noticeable at the lights on Regents Park today. Seems odd to me. No matter what I'm on I always want to accelerate to vmax as hard as I can.

What bike do you commute on, a mountain bike? What shoes do you wear, wellies?
I spent ages getting one of my feet clipped in when I started out this morning, I don't know why, but then I didn't unclip again until I got to work as I ran all the red lights, blasting into the weeds all the welly wearing wobbly wkers on their rusty old Raleigh Lizard's strongman hernia cranking off the lights in 15th gear.

Not if it was his only bike, or he wanted to get used to it/ensure it fitted right , make adjustments etc

I know what you mean though, end of the day a bike is a bike

Agree there - I had to commute on my nice bike for a week early feb, just to get used to the position after my bike fit - was tempted to carry on using it for a bit, but sense prevailed and (after some adjustment) i'm back on the cross bike...

What a silly thread. Moment of idiocy smile
