Can't help you with the demo issue - but I can really recommend the Zesty. I love mine.

Assume you've called the hire places at the trail centres and see what they have? Do the Giant stores still do their hire before you buy thing? you pay £25 and a deposit, take the bike away and try it wherever you want, no obligation etc. I think all the details are online.

Specialized Concept Stores have access to the Specialized hire fleet. Apparently they have every model of bike available in every size.

Whenever I've been into my local Evans they always seem to have the mountain bikes in 'huge'. I'm not a midget - a perfectly normal 31" inside leg...

tbh, i'd settle for a quick scoot around a car park rather than nothing! You should be able to tell if the basic size is right with that, how you sit on/in the bike, adjust seat height, check reach and bar angle, see how the bike carves into turns, pop a manual to see if you like the seat post angle/chain stay length. Pedal hard against the brakes in a low gear to see if the suspension bobs like made. drop off a curb to check the start of stroke progression etc.

No, it won't be like riding off a mountain, but it would quickly tell you if the bike the the basic correct size for you!
