What chain links to repair a chain ?
Discussion
Hoping someone can help as I'm not very clued up on Bikes. My Sons chain has snapped , one of the links has sheared in 2. I have ordered a chain link tool but which links do I need to buy ? They seem to just be 8, 9 or 10 speed links , so do I just need to know the number of gears then order the appropriate links ? Does it make a difference ?
Is it that simple ?
I am going to just remove the broken link and rejoin the chain as a temporary solution.

You could use one of these to rejoin the chain, http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-powerlink-...
If the chain is fecked, which if it's snapped, it probably is, just buy a whole new chain, trim it to the length of the old one, rejoin with a power link as above
You need to match the chain to the number of gears on the cassette, more gears = narrower chain.

Always use KMC missing links on my MTBs. They are different depending on which gears you have sram/shimano use one sort and I think Campag another. You also need different ones depending on how many gears you have - 8,9 or 10.
Easy to put on, bit of a bugger to get off without the special tool.

I use KMC too, they're excellent, but without a special tool they really are a bugger to get off. The KMC tool is about £9 from CRC, however, these work just as well: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-Series-08675-Wire-S...http://www.wiggle.co.uk/wippermann-connex-chain-li...
Forget all the other links, they are s
te compared to wippermann IME. No matter how nasty the chain gets you can always unclip the chain by hand with no fuss. I hate the KMC links with a passion.

For the cost of a new chain it's not worth trying to repair on old broken one
Depends on if you are a roady and can get home easily or a mountainbiker who needs to fix the chain so they can get off the trails without walking or carrying the bike. I'm much happier using a repair link trailside then fiting a new chain.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
