Currenly have Mavic Open Sports. Don't want to spend too much.

Suggestions please?

Fulcrum Racing 7s or 5s, cheap, light, good. The 5 version has aero spokes. I use Racing 5s on my cyclocross bike without much trouble, other than a few broken spokes after a nasty incident at the last Citycross, not the wheel's fault though.

How cheap do you want to go? Shimano R501's are £63 per set at Ribble (with "sale12" discount code) . The 30mm, bladed versions are about £10 more - I put them on my single speed CX bike and no complaints so far for the price.

120mm OLD track ends, or 130/135mm vertical dropouts? Any particular requirements? Flip-flop hub or fixed/fixed?

I have the 5s also. The cheapy stty wheels that came with the bike buckled within weeks of my fat arse on them. The 5s are perfectly true months and miles later.

I don't now, complicated questions! I just ride the thing!

It's a Boardman single speed, with horizontal drop outs, currently with a flip flop hub.

Then I'd expect it to have 120mm hub spacing and a screw-on freewheel. Which rules out all wheel suggestions posted so far.

Very few manufacturers cater for such wheels as an "off the peg" thing, so you'd make life considerably easier going hand built. For sensible money (£300ish) you'd get Miche/Ambrosio hubs laced to a Mavic Open Pro/H Plus Son Archtype/Velocity rim.

Also budget for a White Industries ENO freewheel. Everything else, including Shimanos, are ste.

The Condor ones I suggested 5 posts back will fit the bill - and are handbuilt! c£200

I'd go for DT Swiss RR545 rims personally if I was building up a pair.

They have unnecessary 'chunkiness' to me, I've seen them on a few bikes and they just don't look right, IMO, I think it's the combination of messy graphics, deep rim and alu brake track.

First you need to measure the rear spacing to find the O.L.N, see Sheldon's image below for how to...




Most single speed and track bikes will be 120mm O.L.N.
Vintage steel framed bikes were 126mm O.L.N.
Modern road bikes are 130mm O.L.N.
Off Road and Mountain bikes are 135mm O.L.N.


If your Boardman is a converted road bike it's most likely going to be 130mm O.L.N.

Single speed? An old set of Mavic G40s laced to hubs of your choice. Near indestructable, more than light enough, and better made than virtually anything on the market today.
