Finding routes on Strava (free version)

How do you do this? I have found sections of routes and times for these but can't see the entire route. Is this something you have to 'follow' other users to find or am I just looking in the wrong places?

It used to be easy, in the segment leaderboard you could just click on the dates and it would show that segment as part of their ride and then there was a little button that said "back to ride" and it would show you the full route they took. I have no idea on the new Strava page, it's a complete mess

There is a 'download GPX' option on the map of the other person's ride, top right corner, just to the right of the box you use to select the satellite view. This is, unfortunately for us cheapskates, restricted to 'Premium' members. If you are willing to pay for the privilege, then you can hoover up other peoples' routes to your heart's content.

If you really want to grab someone's route from them, the only way I can really see to do it is to get in touch with them directly (by leaving a comment on their ride page?) and asking them to send you the GPX file to your email address, although this would inevitably mean publishing your email address for all to see.

Thanks all. Oh well looks like I will be back looking at the maps then . At least my rides will now matter being on strava!

Well you can create/recreate routes on the Strava site (or used to be able to, anyway). The question the OP asked was about finding other people's routes. You can find them by searching the site, but downloading them is a 'Premium' member feature. There are a number of sites about whereby you can upload and download routes - I used to use one myself, but cannot now remember the web address, if indeed it is still maintained. On that one you could, as an uploader, describe the terrain, rate the difficulty, and advise on parking/bike shops/cafes on or near to your route. Sadly, many of these types of site fell by the wayside, while Strava and such like took off like rockets. It's a shame, really, as a social site like Strava should IMHO be pushing the exchange of route info and advice between users as a fundamental basic feature of the system, not requiring users to part with cash to join in.

I found a load of local road routes near to me on http://www.mapmyride.com/gb/ but it seems to much of a PITA on Strava.

Try this: http://raceshape.com/heatmap/. look for 'hot' roads and build them into your loop. Great when I travel and need to find nice roads.

Thanks again all, good couple of other sites to have a look on and find some routes. Trying to get back into it so always good to get some proven routes that I'm not going to get bored doing.

The new layout is crap. I really miss the feature that allowed me to view a complete route....

Almost every single main road near me is hot!

It's all still there, "back to ride" has basically just been changed to the Overview link.

Assuming you are looking at a segment first go to the segment leader board page.
e.g. http://www.strava.com/segments/5525248

Click on the date next to the the rider you are interested in
e.g. Laurens ten Dam - Dec 15, 2012 - http://www.strava.com/segment_efforts/1696286546

That will then take you to that segment within the ride you are interested in.

Click on 'Overview' to then see the entire ride like before.
