Which MTB helmet ?

As the title says, much to choose between them ? Worth trying loads ? Do bike shops have a decent range ? Or straight to the mighty e-bay ?

Giro Feature is a good place to start, cheap and comfy, loads of protection around the back and despite the lack of vents, it doesnt get too hot.

For safety gear I dont use ebay. My first lid came from Evans. That one I have just replaced with a catlike, which the larger halfords stock, hence why I got it there and then. Personally id say find a very well stocked lbs if you csn find.

The trouble with the local bike shops is they only seem to stock a small number of suppliers. When I bought my engine bike lid I went to a shop where they had hundreds, same story with my car race lid.

If I go to Halfords, how do I know if it's a big one or not

Try Evans gatwick, you really need to try a few to see what fits your head.

I like the Fox Flux.

Fox Flux for me, and both boys. But as has been said, try as many as you can which means LBSs. You'll get fed up sending them back if you buy on t'web and find it doesn't fit. Heads come in different shapes and sizes, so do helmets. Go for a trail based one though, more protection around the back of your head and at the temples from what I can see. Worth checking out each companies damage replacement policies as well.

Had a Fox Flux and it made me look a bit like a mushroom.

Swapped to Giro Feature and find it very hot, so whilst I like the fit and look I don't use it for longer rides.

Got my eye on an IXS Trail RS next, once they come back in stock anyway.

There was a helmet review article in What MTB a month or so ago, I can see if I can find it and give you the top 5 if you want?

NEVER buy a helmet on the internet unless it's a repeat purchase. Helmets are such a personal product you need to try one on before you know it is the right one for you. Fit of the straps, inner pads, the way it sits on YOUR head (not your mate Gary who says it's the dog's bks).

Differences for prices would be construction techniques, fit, comfort, protection (some extend lower down the back of your head), cooling etc.

Yep, try em on. They all fit differently despite size.

I'm on my second Giro - a Hex after a Phase. The Hex fits me much better, perhaps its the retention system but they are both the same size from the same manufacturer. Go figure.

My wife never got on well with her Giro so we went and tried on a few. She now has a perfectly fitting Fox Flux. Actually fits around her head not on it. The Fox doesn't fit me well at all!
