Garmin Connect - security

Need some advice - Garmin 810
I like fact that I can post data (show off) to friends on face book etc.
Problem is that that means everyone can then know where I live/store-bikes (all friends and friends of friends etc - of which some of latter I do not know).

I can MANUALLY start ride 200m down the road - BUT I know my limitations, and know that I will forget to do this - especially when tired coming back from ride.

Is there anyway that this can be done automatically (ie my garmin knowing I live at.... but not mapping anything within a 200m radius of my home).

Don't know if Garmin Connect does, but Strava certainly has this privacy feature (you may have already known that?)

Use Strava to post to social networks. This has the very feature you are looking for.

No I did not know that about Strava - heard people talking about Strava, but have not pursued it (because I had garmin connect).

So I run the Garmin Connect and then download to Strava, and I can then download to facebook.
Sounds easy - many thanks

Don't even need to use Garmin Connect. Simply go to the Strava website and plug in your device and it will automatically upload for you.

Strava priivacy is not perfect. First, i can see several rides ending at my front door, despite having privacy enabled.

Second, it's a circle round your postcode - on a little street like mine it means tpyour location is not exactly hard to guess.
I've solved the latter by using 2 overlapping postcodes, neither of which is mine. The first issue seems unfixable, but since i've changed the other settings, it sort of looks like my mostmcommon start / stop is the next street along...

Why not alter your facebook settings so only your friends can see your posts. Or if you're worried about friends of friends seeing where you live simply don't post your rides on Facebook.

This is what I do. 2 post codes, neither of which are mine, plus they are both set a different radius's.

I only post frame grabs of my workouts so no one can zoom in or pick up any data.

Major issue though - Strava has led to some nasty bike robberies.

I also don't have any detail of my bikes on Strava, just road and MTB.

TBH I'm a long way down the leader boards so any scum searching for potential targets have a lot to go through until they get to my rides.

with regards to your first comment, I'm pretty sure that you can see the exact start and finish of your rides despite having the privacy function enabled but no one else (or possibly just people you are connected to) can see that part of the ride if it enters one of those zones. The best way to try it is find someone whose address you know but are not connected to on strava and see where the rides start and finish but the second comment is spot on, I have loads of zones around my house, mostly petrol stations and non-residential streets.

It's not difficult to manage though is it? Be careful what you post on social media, don't tell everyone you have an expensive bike and then show them where you live. Don't give people you don't know access to your information.

Most of it can be sorted with some privacy settings and common sense.

The worrying thing is that the pre "new API" version of e.g multiple ride mapper / heatmap put some reasonably heavy lines to my door. Not As dark as the ones out of the privacy zone, but similar to some segments I do occasionally - therefore the zone can't have worked.
To be fair, pre "new api" strava was pretty unprivate, every ride from any rider who had privacy on could be seen via veloviewer with nowt but their athlete number...

Fair point, but posting rides makes you look a bit needy in my opinion. Its like saying look at me, I have ridden 50 miles and want a pat on the back. Keep it to strava and the pedal powered forum, and people who are interested.

I have to agree with this.

I have a sort of mate (don't know him very well) on FB who posts daily GoPro footage of himself surfing. Very badly. It's kind of similar.

Perhaps but then I get constant status updates from people who have either put one foot in front of the other, eaten XY or Z today or just breathed air!

I.e. its full of generally pointless guff so at least Strava updates (generally) are actually an achievement rather than just an every day function.
