Is there a way of working out how much difference a tailwind of a given speed will make?

I'n thinking my 'back from work' Strava segment could tumble tomorrow biggrin

I was thinking of starting a thread asking who was thinking of cycling to work tomorrow. I'll make the decision when I wake up but I'd prefer to go on the bike!

Problem is you'll die as soon as the wind is coming from your left and pushing you into traffic.

Also wondering whether to ride tomorrow. I think based on previous side wind gusts from earlier this year ill probably give it a miss!

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/releases/archive/... basically a headwind for me on mon morning when the storm is it its worst. That on a ss might be a bit too much

Good stuff. I'll put it up there with my 'biggest tongue caught in cheek' award.

I biked home into a 140km/hr headwind a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't the fastest trip, and I had to get off a couple of times to grab hold of lamp posts just so I could stay upright, but doable with a liberal application of rule 5 spin

(however, most of the trip was on cycle lanes, so there was less danger from being thrown sideways by crosswind gusts. I wouldn't recommend attempting this on narrow roads with lots of traffic...)

I went out today, riding into the head wind downhill was like riding uphill!

There never seemed to be any point where the wind was helping!

I struggled yesterday on a regular downhill segment I do. My best time? 54 seconds for the 0.4 mile stretch. Yesterday, with the wind in my face, 1 minute 31 seconds for a massive 16.2 mph average on the same segment, and I had to really work to achieve that. It felt like I'd get blown back up the hill if I slackened my pace for even a second.

There were brief sections where the tail wind felt like it helped, but I reckon you have a maximum window of 15 degrees either side of your 6 O'clock where the wind lends a hand. Outside of that, and it'll just try to blow you into the verge, or into traffic. I've got to say, I prefer to face a direct headwind to a sidewind, and gusting sidewinds are the worst.

Too windy to cycle in SE London at the moment, hoping it'll calm down so I can get out on the bike soon.

I decided to drive to work this morning. A headwind is one thing, but a 50mph gust is enough to push you into oncoming traffic. Mrs Bakerstreet was also fretting about me cycling to work too.

To be honest, I wish I had cycled in this morning. Quite a few traffic ques.

Hopefully my wiggle order will arrive today smile

I've been in the office for about 40 mins now. The journey was interesting but not too bad. At least I had my pick of the bike racks and the showers to myself!

Nice and easy ride in, SW London to Central. Not many bikes around and didn't appear too windy. Combine that with the Northern line being down and I think I made the right decision smile
