Hi guys,

Looking at buying a hard tail 29er.

I've lost a fair amount of weight, but I'm still 22 stone and I'm never going to be less than 17 stone.

So I need a strong bike. What should I be looking for? Steel? Certain makes? Etc?

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure a frame made of string won't be strong enough wink

I was over 20 stones in April.
Just under 17 now.
I just bought a bike I liked (not expensive).
It's still going fine (1000 miles)
It wasn't made of string though.
Ally frame.

Giant road bikes have a frame guarantee of 135kg, so their mountain bikes must be beyond that, they're one of the best brands for the larger rider.

You're unlikely to break anything really unless you're doing ten-foot drop offs.

Just ride, enjoy, rinse and repeat.

Or big fk off spectacular crashes that see you flying one way and the bike the other.

Its not so much the frame you want to worry about but the other bits. I am 17 stone now, was about 18 when I bought the bike.

I bent the crank arm and buckled the wheel.

My Fulcrum Racing 5s have a weight limit of 100Kg but they still run true after many miles.

My mate has a 20 year old Trek MTB & a 2 yr old Giant Hybrid , he's been 20 stone+ at times and 7ft . He's had no real issues bar buckled wheels, so he got a custom wheel set made

Keep up the cycling and you will shed the fat and 14 stone should be achievable long term!

As for which bike the real focus should be on wheels which will be the weak link.

On a serious note avoid full suspension, the extra weight and pivots mean you could end up needing expensive work on all the bearings, I know from experience poor riding style extra and weight mean things fail quicker, specially if your maintainance is lax.

Thanks for the thoughts- i'm 15.2 stone of lean body mass, which with 10% fat makes about 16.5stone give or take. So that's my absolute limit of small size.

Wheels certainly sound like the place to watch for- sounds like something to leave to an expert! What should I instruct them to use in terms of rims etc?

Are you a bodybuilder/strongman?

You need to get a wheel builder to build wheels for your weight and power and keep away from suspension bikes which is just adding to possible problems!

Sorry about the weight loss thing ,I thought you were a fat bd who ate to many fish suppers! wink

Could try the standard wheels for a bit and see how you get on, if you are sympathetic you might be OK, but I knacker wheels quickly and I'm only 75kgs!

Or/and speak to a decent wheel builder and see what they recommend as it is a common question
