Best and Worst Cycle Clothing

I thought this could be interesting. Here is my worst clothing purchase. Its a jersey with the Count on it. I don't know why I purchased it!

I still wear it tho!





Here is my best purchase. A campag jacket. Stunningly warm, its actually to warm from about 6deg upwards. I never noticed its reflective qualities till tonight!

No pics sadly, but I once bought a pair of Kona riding jeans. Real denim jeans only with a neoprene panel sewn in above the back pockets for flexibility. They were half-price and I love a bargain.

I tried them on once, I quickly remembered I was a fat 30 year old trail rider, not a 14 year old skinny jean wearing dirt jumper and I looked a total total tt.

Thr fact they had a 36 waist probably made them all but unsellable to anyone less stupid than me.

Having only recently I.e. Last 12 months got back into cycling I was having the very same thoughts about retro/bad cycle gear.

I still have a set of 1996 Team Marin top and shorts (haven't worn them again), however I have worm the same vintage primal shorts and top (which has a very nice frog holding the seat tube), I will go take some photos.

Endura leggings and some other waterproof leggings still fit!

Op, you're mistaken. The count jersey is clealy the best cycling purchase anyone has made, ever.

My bet? Either newcastle brown, or ph jersey. Not passed another broon top, seen 1 ph jersey. It's nice wearing different to th normal team sky mamils.

Worst jersey is certainly my flouro rain jacket. No point in waterproofing when you you get wetter from sweating...

Best - a couple of front runners; Assos summer shorts and winter knickers, more recently a Torm T5 long sleeved jersey

Worst - without a doubt sports direct padded shorts

Best: padded shorts, Altura progel (I don't wear bibs for commuting), they've protected my arse for a year of commutes. Honourable mention to my Howies short sleeve jersey: circular weave, fits like a black Lycra condom. In a good way.

Worst : bought a genuine Team GB Olympic jersey, half price. Doesn't fit though.

Bes thing I bought is my Paul Smith Giro blue jersey, my favourite piece of bike clothing by far.

Worst is a pair of bib tights bought for me. They are too thick and I get too hot even in sub-zero temps.

There's often one of those hung up in the locker room at work. I always thought it was kind of cool.

That Bath Ales one is giving me terrible flash backs of Watership Down.

I don't get the fashion for being covered in ads in lurid colours.

Some of my top are bright so I can be seen but the only labels are on the inside. Even on my road bike.

My best is this Gore gilet.


Windstopper Active front and mesh back with pockets plus slits so that you can access your jersey pockets. Packs down to nothing. Easily my most versatile piece of kit.

Worst is same as previously mentioned, the dreadful sponge padded Sports Direct shorts.

Ah, but in those few months it keeps me warm and toastie, and encourages me to go out when normal clothing wouldn't be suitable.

I have some of those shorts, I must be lucky as they're a perfect fit for me and ideal for less than an hours commute.

I think that with cycling clothing it's very easy to spend way over 50% of the total cost of your kit on stuff that is only really usefull less than 20% of the time. But if you're determined to go out whatever the conditions having that perfect top for some light drizzle or the right length shorts for the temperature makes you almost forget how much they cost or how little you actually need them.
