Self servicing

I have just got myself a Trek MTB and have been clocking up some miles this week and one thing that I have always wanted to do for myself is service my bike. It cant be that hard right?

All previous attempts have gone ok but it has been luck rather than judgement and my gears have been SO bad that it was almost impossible to make them any worse.

All I really want to do is be able to keep my brakes braking and my gears working well. Currently the brakes are fine but the gears need a tweak. One gear on the rear cog misses when you change up, if you change up again, it changes twice and then I have to change down to select the gear.

I know that there are two screws that sort the issue out but what I want to know is what screw does what and which way do they need to be turned. Now I have a decent bike, I need some decent knowledge. Trial and error will not cut it now.

The Zinn book is one of - if not the - best written "instructional" books around. Everything is explained in nice, clear terms with equally clear diagrams, yet is never patronising nor lacking in detail. Well worth a punt.

Ordered. I can see me spending a lot of time on the bike now so it's best that I know how to keep it sweet.
