I'm just not getting enough time on the road, once a week if lucky, so to support my quest to get fit I thought of getting a turbo trainer. I just need something to help me get fit, loose weight and make me faster for some sportives that I want to do next year. Any thoughts?

I have a Kurt Kinetic, can't fault it at all. Depends on your budget and how much time you are likely use it.

What's keeping you off the road at the moment?

Thanks for the response all. Initially I thought I wanted a high end integrated trainer with video footage but now, from your suggestions, I'm probably going to go for something more basic. I don't get home until after dark at this time of year and don't fancy risking it down the local Sussex lanes, much better to stay safe and dry in the garage!

There is no substitute for miles I'm afraid. Can you not ride to work?

I do however understand its tricky sometimes. I have both a turbo and rollers, and would always opt for the rollers. Much more like riding a bike.

Agreed, to a point. Sitting on a turbo will drive you insane.

Elite Crono Gel. A few people on PH have them. I bought mine from Wiggle at Xmas and paid about £160 and used it through out the winter months. Mine isn't too loud and has been perfectly reliable.

You will need a towel to catch the sweat and a riser block for the front wheel. I also put a could of magazines under the front wheel as well.

You will sweat a lot!

About 30-40 minutes is all I can stand on the turbo, it's not just the boredom, its the heat. Even in my garage with the door up in the dead of winter, in shorts and SS it's crazy hot!

I have a large wall-mounted fan in my (unheated) garage set to top speed and blowing straight at me. Helps a bit.

You do. Tacx Genius. It *is* a substitute for miles (I did about 80% of my IM training on mine, riding either the French Alps on DVD or the IM course on Google Earth).

Any old trainer, plus trainerroad, and perhaps a smattering of sufferfest videos. Ideally allied to a power meter..

I completely agree. Tacx Fortius here - absolutely invaluable and I couldn't train properly without it, especially in the winter.

"Normal" turbos absolutely bore me to tears after 30mins, but give it 2 or 3 months and I'll regularly be on the Fortius for 2 - 3hrs at a time.

Cracking piece of kit.

I'm also thinking about getting one as I cant get out as often as Id like. So...Whats good for use with an MTB? And do I need to change the rear tyre for use on a trainer? Are there any reason's, (other than heat issues), that a trainer cant be used indoors in front of the TV?

That's the *only* place to use a turbo!

I have nothing to compare it with but I really like my Kurt Kinetic. I use it with sufferfest videos to keep the boredom at bay.
