Bike Part Name

Hi all,

On my trip to italy last week a piece of metal dropped off my Cannondale Synapse, it was stuck on the bootom frame next to the crank , but I do not know what its called. Its obviously some type of frame guard.

Any one know the correct name?

If you mean crank and not "crack" was it a chain catcher?

edited thanks, its not a catcher, its on the part of the frame that runs from the crank to the rear wheel, and is just a protector of some sort

Chainstay protector.

Not a chainstay protector, it was stuck onto the frame where is flares out from the Bottom Bracket and looks to protect the carbon in case the chain gets trapped between the crank and frame

Was it there to prevent chain-suck (where the chain sticks to the chainring and is dragged up behind the bottom bracket)?

I have the same thing on my Canyon, its an aluminium plate to protect the frame if the chain comes off (which mine did a few times and it actually took a gouge out of the plate). No idea what its called but your Cannondale dealer should be able to help.

It's still a chain stay protector, just a smaller metal one that is close to the BB rather than the other place you find them.

Pffff. I wish I'd had one of those on my GT Avalanche when it decided to pick the chain up and gouged a hole in the chainstay. My fault as I'd hit a rock and bent some teeth on the middle chain ring. These bent teeth then failed to release the side plates of the chain on the first revolution after changing onto the middle ring. Bike is still going, and has even done a couple of laps of Swinley's Red Trail, but confidence in the bike is now much lower than it ever was
