I can't comment on the Halfords bike but you could have a rummage through this - www.wiggle.co.uk - lots of good deals to be had on the main brands, also you can't go wrong with anything from Planet X - not trendy but easily as good as the more fashionable makes. Lots of bike for the money.
The Mekk does look like good value but I personally would go for the Felt - I've got the F75 which is the Alu version and I've hammered it to within an inch of its life in the last year - it still feels box fresh. Plus it comes with the slightly better component than the Mekk, although it is a bit of a mishmash on both bikes.
Wireless computer - you'll be paying ~300 for a garmin with actual satnav built in (Edge800/810) but the lesser models are fine just to record routes, and/or give you a breadcrumb trail to follow them next time (less that £100 for the edge 200)
SPD's are great - you can start off with some shimano M520 pedals (£17) and pick up some cheapo shoes next time Aldi/Lidl have a cycling promotion on (£20).

I carry spare tube and puncture kit in a saddle bag... but i am also part time MTB'er.
I wear a MTB helmet even on my road bike - just bought a new one last week actually, Giro Hex, from Amazon for £47 (RRP usually £70+)

A carbon bike won't be any quicker as such but may be less harsh than alu frames which might be nice on longer rides but personally I wouldn't be too worried about carbon at £1k. Giant Defy/TCR and Cannondale CAAD 10 would be a good bet, I don't rate Specialized road bikes at that price point.

For a first bike you'd be hard pushed to beat one of these I think. They often have some good deals on shoes and other bits of kit.

Strongly recommend going into a shop and trying some on. They're different shapes. I've been eyeing up the Catlike models recently but tried them on yesterday and they're entirely the wrong shape for my head - too 'round'. No one seems to have mentioned a helmet so far.
My rule with bike stuff is to buy branded stuff, so specialized, Scott, Trek, Sportful etc.
For my helmets I've bought basic Bells and Giros. I fell off my road bike the other week and woke in hospital,to this day I don't know what happened, other that no one hit me. My Giro has a large hole in it, but it saved me from possible death, I had concussion for 10 days that's all.
From memory I paid about £20 from decathlon. Money well spent IMHO

I have those pedals with R088 Shoes. They work awesome when I don't forget to unclip and fall over at traffic lights I'd get these to go with those shoes.................they'll come with a set of cleats.
