Hi all,

I'm just getting back into cycling so dug out my old Mountain Bike. It's a ten year old Claud Butler. So nothing special, built to a budget with Shimano lower range wheels and gears etc. I gave it a once over and went to the local forest. Got nice and muddy.

I can afford something better, but didn't want to buy something and then get bored. I've already looked at the Rockrider 8.1 that comes recommended as a starter bike from Decathlon, so want to give it another few attempts and then possibly go to some dedicated trails.

After this I noticed the hubs were in need of grease and to be honest I think I've made a bit of a hash of it. I'll take them to my LBS, which is a Cycles UK and see what they say. At least I gave it a go myself and can gain some experience when I upgrade to a better bike. The wobble is quite bad now and I either get the cones too tight and resistance is too high, or I get them too loose. I've followed a few YouTube videos and online tutorials so not sure what else it could be.

I noticed that one of the cones lossened during a test ride, so I'm guessing that the hub may be shot as any tighter and there is too much resistance. If I tighten it more there is a slowing resistance and I can feel the grind. Or am I missing something else?

Also I'm thinking of buying these wheels just to replace them, rather them pay the service cost plus the possible new hubs.

You know you "lock" the cones in place so it doesnt matter how tight the cones are they wont move?

If its either loose or grinding then its new hub/balls/cones time depending on whats damaged.

Thanks. I locked them in, but something went wrong. Perfectly prepared to accept that it may be a mistake on my part. I'll see what they say.

I presume you don't have quick release wheels.

When you tighten the wheel nuts up you must not let the spindle turn, what happens is if you keep tightening on one side only the cone lock nut will stop still on the forks and the wheel nut will turn the spindle, which loosens the cone on that side.

Try just nipping one side then nip the other, then alternate between them until the nuts are tight.

Thanks. I did look to see if that happened. I'll take it apart again tomorrow and start again.

Regarding Rutland, they are a great bunch of people and most of my money goes to them in person and online.

Thanks for that. They will get the order then. They looked pretty decent.
