Straight to tapered steerer, 9mm axle to 15mm - how easy?
Discussion
I have a Cotic Soul 3 frame with tapered steerer compatible head tube. Currently running a straight steerer 100mm Fix SID Race with hatefully useless remote poplok. Seen a good deal on CRCs 120mm Fox (which I used to have and preferred) tapered 120mm forks on 15mm Maxle - this would basically "complete" the perfect bike (for me!).
My headset is a Hope, as is my front hub {Pro 2). Any ideas how easy it is to convert the headset and axle/hub?
If it's do-able (I'm fairly okay with most stuff and have plenty of tools) I may pull the trigger.

For the headset you'll only need the lower part of the headset.
If you look up Hope mixer headsets, you can mix and match the upper and lower cups to suit so you only need to buy that. I'd advise that you call they guys at Cotic as they're incredibly helpful with letting you know what bits you need for things like this.

The adaptors to convert from 9mm QR to 15mm axle are the same for Pro 2 and Pro 2 Evo front hubs. They're a doddle to change

you already have your answer re. the hubs, and for the headset you just need a new lower half; The Hope pick and mix system means you can buy them separately. You want lower headset 'H: http://www.biketart.com/2593/products/hope-pick-n-...

Sorry, last question; steerer tube cutting -will a normal plumbers pipe cutter work (dad has a good one)?!
The whole job is easy... but you really need a press to do the headset, I know people who've used a block of wood and a hammer and haven't had an dramas but as the price for failure is probably a knackered frame I'd get an expert with the right tools to do it, let them do the rest at the same time. Pipe cutters are fine for steerer tubes and seat posts, but concentrate on lots of turns and low pressure or you'll form a burr on the end and it won't fit sweetly.
It's a Hope and I apparently don't need any extra bits! Just the axle converter for the hub.
Going to get a mate to do it; he's a trained technician (ex SRAM race team) and very good. I reckon I could do it all but I'm a little worried about busting the frame or forks! Going to his workshop next week. I'm still injured after a nasty calf impact so need to be patient!
The forks look amazing; and almost a third of the RRP!

For 'press' read 'vice' or 'length of studding with suitable nuts, washers and spacers'.
Snottard.
Is somtimezard - I tried every trick in the book and had to get my LBS to do it. Snottard.
I hate not having the right tool!

Okay I'm going to try this myself after successfully stripping and cleaning the headset last week (which surprised me!).
How hard is inserting the star nut? I see you can use a screwdriver or spend a load on a special tool. Can I get away with the former?!
I think I can fit the brake (X0), convert the hub to 15mm (part on order) and cut the steerer (by borrowing dads pipe cutter; I'd mess it up with a hacksaw!). Looks like the headset lower conversion is easy (just remove a spacer/crown race thingy). Anywhere else I'm likely to fall down? About a grands worth of potential damage should it go very pear shaped...!

If you're that worried about it, or there's that much at risk, ask your bike shop to do the steerer/star-nut. If they're any good, they'll do it for a couple of Belgian buns. How hard is inserting the star nut? I see you can use a screwdriver or spend a load on a special tool. Can I get away with the former?!
