What £600-£700 bike?

Sorry, it's been covered before but I've been back many, many pages (in 'pro' mode!) and can't find anything that helps.
I'm basically looking to short list a few bikes so I can then visit my LBS before deciding. It's basically to do the trails around where I live and maybe into South Wales. Back (15+ years) when I did it loads I bought based on a good frame/forks as the other components could be upgraded as and when they broke or showed their weaknesses, maybe you'd advise the same? Obviously now is a good time to look at MY13 bikes in the sales so I'm happy to look at that.
I know there is some debate about 26"/27.5"/29", I've read about it and I don't care either way to be honest, if the bike is a 29er then so be, likewise a 26er.
