Having just got a pair of upgraded wheels (not yet fitted, admittedly!) it got me thinking; given a budget which upgrades would you do to give you the most noticeable improvements per pound spent?

Cheers

Probably tyres first, then wheels...

On the assumption they've not been done for a while, new cables throughout and proper indexing. Costs peanuts, but makes any drivetrain feel like new.

Tyres then wheels here too. Amazing what a difference it makes. It can literally transform most road bikes from feeling pretty sloppy to absolutely razor sharp.

Brake pads. I swapped the stock pads fitted to my Sora brakes to Swisstop pads and they were transformed. Much better control and power.

Tyres by far, especially on a sub £1k bike. £40-60 spent here will make a huge difference to how the bike rides, swapping basic Continentals for Rubino Pro on my bike made it easier to climb, accelerate and turn.

Agreed, I loved the Rubino Pros on mine. So 'sticky' in corners, first time I've ever felt a difference in 'grip' on-road.

My bike is aluminium. I swapped the seat post for a £30 odd quid carbon/composite one. Huge difference and now rides like a magic carpet (in comparison).

Wheels. Upgrading makes the biggest single difference.

Tyres first, i am sure I read some blurb that this provides the biggest gain.

IMO, wheels will make the biggest difference..BUT
Bang for buck, tyres probably edge it as you're not going to be getting a half decent set of wheels for under £300 or so!

No one has said Pedals/Shoes.. Or is it assumed most have these from the start?

Wheels. Then the things you touch. Saddle and bars/bar tape.
