My first road bike - B'twin FC700

OP, ignore the roadie t
ts above - that's a well nice bike, and you can put whatever pedals you like on it.
I use SPD's on my roadie, it really helps being clipped in - you can use more of your leg motion and therefore go faster / further etc. You can also get proper shoes to go with that don't mean you have the mincing walk issues that proper road shoes have, and at my performance level, I'm sure it doesn't make a big difference beteen SPD and SPD-SL.
Other poster - if you do get a road bike, definately get some proper bib shorts - longer rides are just impossible without proper shorts, and bibs are much comfiier when in roadie position than mtb shorts. However, you can still retain dignity / not show everyone your sweaty arse by wearing normal shorts / mtb outers over the top - that's what I do (I like pockets, and dislike MAMILtoe). You don't need to fear the lycra, just manage it =)

I don't know too much about the SPDs so I got flat pedals which I was used to from my mountain bike.
I'll look into getting the SPDs now then... live and learn

all about bikes if I'm honest (I'm more into cars)...
what's wrong with reflectors and those pedals?

k all wrong with your bike, it's accessories, or how you decide to set it up and ride it. Your bike, your rules. There is however, a website (see sticky at the top of the PedalPwered front page) which purports to make and enforce something called 'The Rules'. This is a humorous exercise in creative writing which, for the most part can be completely ignored. Some particularly stoopid people, however, seem to have swallowed these 'rules' whole, and can regurgitate them at will. These stoopid people form a uniquely adenoidal sub culture within cycling, called 'the bike snobs'. You will never meet a 'bike snob' and be left thinking "I need some of what he's been smoking", nosiree Bob. It just won't happen.
You will probably find that the comments about the flat pedals are credible, though. You'll get more out of some toe clips, or some form of cleated ('clipless', in cycling parlance) pedals with specialist shoes, but it'll be perfectly ride-able as it is.

They're not even 'wheel' reflectors.
