I am taking out some bike insurance to cover my bikes for commuting and Triathlon competing.

The options for Public Liability cover a £1 mil, £2 mil, £5 mil.

The difference is only a few quid a month but do I really need £5M cover. How much damage can I do? Is best to just get the highest amount in case?

Do you have to have something like a BC license for the triathlons? does that cover you with insurance anyway? I know my race license does for road and mtb races. I'm fairly sure it's 1 or 2m not 5.

If you are a BTF member you get a race licence but I haven't yet done my first Tri so was going to buy a day licence first time to see how I get on and then maybe join. I still need the insurance for theft and commuting and training.

This will give you upto 10m for non-competitive cycling for £21 per year

If you want competitive PL cover you would need the more expensive race membership

You don't need it. The reason its only a few quid extra is because the insurance company carries almost no additional risk as a result of the higher maximum. Its just their way of getting a few extra pounds of you because it looks good value.
