New CX wheels required...

After yesterday's incident, leading to this



It seems I am in need of new wheels for the CX bike...

So, suggestions please. No real budget set, so all price ranges considered.

Ideally black rims as per those now fubar'd. Will consider others, grey etc. Disc hubs needed. Have already started thinking Chris King hubs...

I retain the right too poo poo, sneer at, and deride any and all suggestions provided. I will just choose what I want anyway.

Chris King and Stans crest would be a suggestion, or hope hoops, they were good enough for the three peaks winner.

have a look at tubeless tyres, you can run lower pressure for better grip and not risk pinch flats, loads of tyre choice now and they save a fair bit of weight.

A good starting point would be Stans Alpha ZTR 400 rims on DT Swiss 240 hubs from www.justridingalong.com

Reviews seem good, price is decent.

Can then get the others rebuilt as a spare set...

Hope Hoops with Crest Rims. Plenty of axle options and fine on a MTB if the need arises.

And lighter than the above Kinesis CX Disc.

So tomorrow I'm taking the wheels into Sigma and will get them rebuilt with H Plus Son Archetype rims

Lots of talk about Stans No Tubes rims but I'm surprised no one has mentioned their CX disk specific rim the Iron Cross?

Several riders at the Central Cyclocross race last weekend were on them and several people were complaining about rolling off tyres (both clincher and tubs) but the chap on ICs was very very pleased with his rims. I had a look at his spares and they were very light. He'd built his own on Novatec hubs but you can spend more on Hope if you like.

I think I'm going to get a set. This bloke sells them on the bay

Ive been looking onto building a set of wheels for mine. Im going to use the stock heavy ones with road tyres for the winter and some nice light ones with knobblies for off road and the summer. Ive looked at Hope etc and cant afford it to be honest so that leaves the Novatec and Supertar Componant hubs (that Ive found for less than a ton for the pair) Looked at Halo road rims as I want white rims, works out at around 140 plus spokes.

A CX bike passed me on Dartmoor on Sunday - I was VERY rocky and hard to even stay on the bike; I caught him up as he finally had to get off and push (I was just about staying up - on a 26" wheeled MTB) but he then carried on. I was with the missus so couldn't really push on but I was left rather amazed at what a cx bike can do!

They do make excellent CX wheels, I think they make a matching jersey too. Not sure how easy it is to get off though.

The likes of STW and BikeRadar would have you believe that you need 160mm of travel and 2.5" tyres for anything more rugged than a gravel driveway.

Hee hee hee! I have to admit these are often big rocks and staying on was hard at times but my hardtail with 120mm up front was totally fine. I do wonder when I see a serious FS rig being lugged around a trail centre, what they are thinking. Totally agree about being over biked; I like mine simple, low in weight and think my 2.1" tyres are more than enough.
