Confused with rear mechs!

My SRAM X9 mech has come to the end of its useful life. The jockey wheels look like ninja throwing stars and the bearings are knackered. A fair bit of play in the pivots and the return spring on the shifter unit has stopped working to I have to fish the lever back to 'park' with my thumb every time I change up!
After recently treating myself to a new XT crankset, chain and cassette, I'll probably go XT with the rear mech and shifter (10-speed).
What is the difference between the XT M781 Shadow mech and the XT 781 (non-shadow) mech? As far as I can tell, just the price?
I'm also running 3x10 (24, 32, 42 with an 11-36 cassette) so I assume I need the long-cage SGS rear derailleur... but again, not too sure!

Yes, will match shifter and rear mech, although think you can mix Shimani and SRAM front mech/shifters without issue, but not rear?
Anyway, shadow is just a bit more of a slimmer design to keep it from snagging on undergrowth etc. Thanks.

Shadow mechs are more flush with the wheel so you get less rock strikes. Shadow plus uses uses a clutch to stop the chain bouncing around so much - can be released to take the wheel off.
For 3x10 you should be looking at a long cage as there is more difference in how much chain is on the ring and so the mech arms needs to move further.
Why not save the money and just change the mech to another SRAM one? No need to spend on shifters then. The X0 setup I have now is on a whole new level from the XT mech I had before. Faster, sharper shists.

Didn't realise there was a Shadow + option. Another thing to think about.
Could keep to SRAM I suppose, but as the shifter is knackered as well (thumb lever doesn't spring back to 'park' position), I'm in the market for rear mech and rear-shifter no-matter-what, so thought I'd try Shimano this time.

XT Shadow - as XT but with a 'slimline' design to reduce damage risk from scenery snagging
XT Shadow Plus - as Shadow but with an added 'clutch' which you can turn on and off. This tensions the jocky wheel cage preventing forward movement and keeps the chain in tension, helping to reduce chain slap and dropped chains on the really bumpy stuff.
All available in regular or long cage. Long cage for me to cope with my 3 x 10 setup.
Prices increase slightly as you move down the list.
Think I'm going to plump for the XT Shadow Plus (around £68 in Evans at the moment) with a matching XT shifter pod.
