Hi, currently riding circa 50 miles/ave 16mph but running very low on energy at 40 miles'ish. Please recommend energy bars/gels/fluids and give me an idea of amount and frequency. Thanks!

I find the CLIF brand energy bars and gel shots very good and easy on the stomach.

Not the easiest thing to carry and keep looking good though. Soreen lunchbox loafs for the win. I have one every 90 mins topped up with a little bag of haribo starmix. Much nicer tasting and than Cliff bars and gels.

Your body just needs conditioning. You should be able to do that sort of distance with a bottle of water and that's about it. Unless its very hot then have some sort of electrolyte additive in it. In the meantime, take a mars bar or a snickers with a bottle of water and you'll be fine.

Mars or Snickers? Aside from the fact you'd have to drink them once they've spent more than 10 minutes in your jersey pocket, they'll be utterly useless. HUGE sugar spike and associated crash, coupled to a nice lump of fat lurking about your digestive system right when you don't want it.

Bananas, Soreen or the food of the cycling gods that is flapjack. Sorted.

Kellogg's Elevenses are great to eat and don't melt, cheap too. Try eating something like this after two hours as that's when you start to need to take on more energy. Also something like porridge for breakfast will help.

Drink wise I find that High5 is very good, a 750ml bottle of it should do you for 50 miles unless it's hot in which case you'd do well to take some water as well.

Gels are a waste of money unless you're racing and need a quick fix.

OP only needs to last another 10 miles, so all he needs is a sugary hit. Nonsense about 'crash' too in this circumstance. A snickers would be fine and would see him through the last 10 miles with ease. Granted it may well be a bit melted by then. I never take food with me on my rides so didn't really think about that aspect. Just don't waste money on expensive marketing claptrap energy bars etc etc. He just needs a simple fix to see him over the line.

OP,
I use breakfast bars, they're good on the go. Personally, I like the red (jordans?) ones, they're chewey so you can eat one without having a drink. Ones like those nature valley ones make your gob too dry. Have one BEFORE you get hungry, and you'll not have the energy dip. Ignore the internet heros who can do 100 miles on nothing mroe than a 500ml bottle of sand, every normal human I have ever ridden with uses food and water instead.

Been very impressed with the clif shot bloks, easy to consume, and then wash with some water.

Might have to try the sand in a bottle, just hope Dizzee can give me a guide on how to get the lid off my tight bottles.
