When you put your cycling socks on are you supposed to put the left or the right one on first?

And when you take them off do you have to reverse the procedure or is the same way acceptable?

I usually have my head and arms stuck in my jersey so I have to get my wife to remove my socks.

I don't think the order is as important as making sure you put the correct sock on the appropriate foot. I was out last week on a sportive only to realise 20 miles in that I had put the sock marked L on the right foot and the sock marked R on the left foot. I immediately stopped to rectify the situation. The ensuing pile up of expensive carbon bikes was a bit of a mess and initially my fellow riders were less than impressed. However once I had explained the predicament they were all very understanding and soon forgot about the layers of skin they had left on the tarmac.

I hope you deducted those initial 20 miles from any further discussions about your ride.

If your socks were on the wrong feet, then those miles don't count.

I had SPDs implanted into the soles of my feet to prevent this issue from ever arising.

I think the most important thing is to ensure they're not too tight. Not only does this restrict blood flow (which may affect your brain), but you also may have difficulty taking them off after a ride (or even worse, still be wearing them a few days later).
