I've a Thule 916 bike carrier for the towbar and it allows access to the boot quite easily with the bikes on the carrier. Link to Thule website -http://www.thule.com/en/jp/products/carriers-and-racks/bike-carriers/towbar-mounted-bike-carriers Take your pick from here
It tilts away from the car for ease of access to the boot, it's light and very easily fitted/removed and can be stored in the boot while I'm away from the car if need be. There are cheaper options on the market but Thule do have a good reputation.

A Disco or Van is too high to get a bike on top without using a ladder. It also means you can't get into multi-story car parks, or under some low archways. Blocking lights is indeed for morons, but most people will use a tail light board.
Don't worry, scubadude describes himself as a director on his PH profile, no doubt he could lift a BMW GS onto the roof of his car. 
Anyway, perhaps my wife is only 5'3", perhaps I have a roof tent already up there. I think tailgate/tow ball mount suits us better.

"Most" people do not use lightboards, they just drive around with no rear lights and an obscured numberplate. Also- what mutli-storey are you taking a Disco or Van into (if it'll fit) where there are spaces long enough for a towbar rack anyway?
Wait till some pr*ck wipes his bike down the side of your car with a rear carrier then come back here and tell me how smart they are...

...or inside...Or get a Karitec or similar folding rack where you fit the bikes down the side of the car then shove the whole rack back onto the roof
