Cube or Boardman - Which one to get?

Hi there,

First off, apologies for what I hope isn't too much of a repost of the what bike? threads.

Secondly, The missus is after replacing her road bike now after putting alot of miles through it and generally has just outgrown the bike in terms of fitness, performance etc so is looking to get a new one. Budget around £1300-£1400 but £1500max.

We'd rather buy from a local bike shop and we've seen a few that have teased the budget and look a good spec for what she wants. She wants a full carbon bike, light, perform well, fast and it's got to look good aswell as not be a piece of crap.

Been looking at Cubes and Boardman bikes all from our local bike shops.

But we need some opinions on the best bike to go for, out of the ones we are looking at.

Also EvanCycles.com is near me too so may pop down there and have a look in, but not too clued up and brands etc on what they sell around our budget, so if anyone can recommend brands etc.

I have the Cube as well, it is a great bike, looks good in red/white/black too. I had it in the living room for a while as it was so nice to look at!

Hardly lbs. but you can buy a whole lot of canyon for that kind of money.

Have a look at Evans as they have the new range of bikes by Chris Hoy (know idea how they compare against a Boardman)

The top end Hoy is ali frame with all ultegra group and 8.8kg vs the Boardmans carbon frame and 105 groupset at 8.2kg. The boardman also comes with heavy wired tyres so scrubbing off another 200g is easily done. (A comparable mail order Canyon ali frame Ultimate AL 8.0(£1369) is ali frame but 7.35kg?! or the 8.0 at 7.7kg/£1199)

You can get the Boardman under £1100 if you use the right vouchers on the right day (e.g. 10% off with british cycling + 10% off week 2 weeks back)

I may have dreamed it but I think I saw planet X offering their sub-8kg X-Pro carbon with Ultegra for £1199. SRAM Rival is defo £999 and they do a wimin's frame.

The Boardman has the best frame of the lot. I would go for the original black bike, not the SE with downgraded groupset.

Also, have a look at re-sale values on eBay. The Boardman TCs go for £800-£900. Very few other bikes have such good percentage residual values. Cube's fetch £300-£500.

Many thanks for your replies.

She went into the local bike shop today and tried a load of different frames etc, feel, comfort and positioning. She settled on the Cube Agree GTC Pro as the comparable difference between that and the race one was negligible and a £300 price difference. She's happy, should pick it up either Saturday or Monday.
