Need to upgrade Shimano 2300 shifters, cheaply as possible

I have a new Genesis Volant with Shimano 2300 groupset which I'm really enjoying, apart from the shifters which are garbage. The throw on the downshift is too long, and I really dislike the thumb upshift controls as I can't reach them when riding on the drops.
So, what's the easiest and cheapest way to upgrade? I could also do with changing the 12-25 cassette for something like an 11-28 but going to 10 speed would require a new rear mech and chain as well as the shifters and cassette I guess?
So, any advice? I'm not averse to eBay and 2nd hand bits if needed.

8p, so unless you can find some old, Dura Ace/Ultegra/105 (and even then I think the shifters may be as yours are now. And pull ratios?), you'd have to replace the shifters and cassette to 9sp, using pre-2012 Tiagra or 2013 Sora. This assumes you want the release paddle directly behind the pull/brake lever.So, what's the easiest and cheapest way to upgrade? re. cassette, 11-28 won't be ideal. 50:11 is a big gear! Bigger steps between gears too. 9sp cassettes can be found in 12-27 (vs. your current 12-25), although again that'd require a 9sp setup.

50:11 would be fine as a top ratio, it's pretty easy to spin out the 50:12 at the moment and some more top end would be nice on descents. I was thinking Sora shifters, maybe 2nd hand from someone upgrading assuming they're compatible.

Prior to 2013 Sora had thumb-shifters, 9sp only. For 2013 the release paddle moved behind the brake lever a la Tiagra and upward, and remained 9sp.Shimano do an 8 speed 11-28 cassette but it's a Deore MTB one, would that fit and work with my existing bits?
Forgot about the MTB stuff too. I'm not 100% re. compatibility, although I can't see why they shouldn't work.

I don't mind the thumbshift as I have big hands and just about click the shift from the drops. The throw to go to a higher gear is the worse part.

They would do nicely. Going to get expensive upgrading though. Will need new cassette, chain, probably new derailleur. Would like to keep the option of getting a triple chainset also. Could I use triple shifters with a compact and just be careful not to shift to a ring that isn't there? Then upgrade to a triple later on.
I've just gone through pretty much this - having replaced the Sora 8 speed shifters that had finally died on my old winter/training road bike.
The Sora side button thing doesn't bother me so I've replaced the old shifters with a pair of 9 Speed Sora 3400 3x9 - but this still forced me to confront the 8 to 9 speed thing.
You will as you say need a new cassette and chain - I've read that peeople have succussfully run 8 speed chains on a 9 speed block, but it's marginal.
You will be fine with your current front and rear mechs - even the 2300 mech will be fine with the narrower chain.
I've never tried it but I reckon you'll be ok using a Triple shifter with a compact chainset in the short term too, if you set the limit screws on the front mech to prevent it shifting into the unused third position.
What chainset do you have ? You'll need to check that the chaainrings will accomodate a 9 speed chain.
