ladies bikes again

I have a female friend who is 5ft 5 and looking for a very cheap first bike, I'm thinking hybrid or hardtail mountain bike, I don't suppose anyone is aware of anything being sold off at the moment? she would like to spend £100, but I'm sure this could be increased a little. so far I've managed to convince her not to buy one from asda or tesco...

how often is it going to be used and for how long? sometimes only spending £100 on a BSO from Halfords does actually make sense.

If she wants to actually enjoy cycling then you will need to introduce her to budget creep and man maths but £300 gets something usable these days.

more often than not, lack of basic maintenance is what kills a bike not the original cost

Get her to a Decathlon store if at all possible. Decent cheap bikes in a variety of styles.

Why is it that women have this process?

1. I'd like to do a thing.
2. I think [thing] will cost £x
3. Now, some research.
4a. Thing turns out to be doable for far less than £x: woman spends £x anyway.
4b. Thing turns out not to be doable properly for £x: woman either spends £x anyway, does Thing not-properly and gives up (thereby wasting £x) or gives up and moves onto next thing.


Anyway: Decathlon is a good call. Don't buy anything with suspension under ~£300/400; it's just extra weight to pull around. Get her some thick comfy gel gloves to kill vibration.
